The "Barrio Fiesta" is basically, in translation, whether in Tagalog (Filipino) or Spanish means neighbourhood party. So it's like a town festival for the whole of London, for Filipinos and non-Filipinos alike, getting to experience the culture and customs of the Philippines.
As someone who is has been raised in Britain and grew up with Filipino customs (although I don't speak the language, but understand a little bit), the "Barrio Fiesta" gives a taste of the Philippines, but not really.
You cannot replace the experience of going back to the country and experiencing its culture first hand, because I did had some life changing experiences whenever I go back there.
What they got right, is the prescience and the great amount sponsorship that dominates the venue. This is something you can see within the landscape of Manila, as you can see massive billboard ad space in every corner of the city.
And of course, the entertainment headlined by some stars of ABS-CBN (The Filipino Channel), one of the biggest television channels in the Philippines. In my opinion, I did get a show worth every penny I spent (NOTHING). But hey, business is business, and without them, this event couldn't be staged every year.
My main focus on this set, is to show my view on the Barrio Fiesta, and it really is down to the people who make this event successful year after year. I like to try and give that sense of the Barrio Fiesta was like, when I was younger, before all the major sponsors took it up and to give a sense of Filipino culture through my eyes.
Anyways, so after getting a risk sun stroke and a very bad tan, here are the highlights of my set. The rest can be found on my Flickr account. Tell me what you think? Am I wrong about the status of the Barrio Fiesta? And if you want, share it with other people.
*Please note: Any of the companies represented in my photos haven't paid me to do this.
