As I watched The
Avengers over the weekend, I didn’t enjoy it. This was due to watching it in 3D. The Avengers did
seem like a film that you want to sit back and enjoy. Due to the 3D, my experience was some how limited and
distracted me from the story.
As I just read from Wikipedia (I know, it’s not a reliable
source), The Avengers wasn’t shot in
3D, but was done in post-production.
I understand, why the studio did this and of course it’s was all for
profit. What I don’t like is that
the studio tries to enforce the effect of 3D, when it wasn’t necessary.
From reading and watching a lot reviews and criticism about
3D in film, I can agree that 3D is a gimmick, but it is definitely here to
stay. What will be interesting is
the release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected
Journey later this year. I
can’t remember where I got the source from, but Peter Jackson has shot the film
at a rate of 48 frames per second (double the frame rate of conventional cinema). With this frame rate Mr Jackson said it
would make 3D a better experience.
Overall, I think 3D should be handled carefully to give the
viewer an enhanced cinema experience.
At present, 3D is used as a marketing ploy in order to get customers in
cinemas. With my experience with The Avengers, I would want to go back to
the cinema and watch it in it’s original form i.e 2D. Despite the criticism of the 3D, The Avengers is a badass film and has set a bar for Superhero
films. All I have to do now, is
wait for The Dark Knight Rises.
